Peter Sommer Travels - is a specialist tour operator offering archaeological cruises and land based tours for small groups around the ancient sites of Turkey.
An archaeologist as well as a TV Producer/Director who has worked on many landmark historical documentaries for British and American television, such as In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (BBC/PBS), and Tales from the Green Valley Peter Sommer has been organising and leading archaeological cruises in Turkey and Britain since 1996.
From Luxury gulet cruises to retracing the route of Alexander the Great
Trips range in price from £1,195/$2,445 for a 1-week gulet cruise accompanied by an archaeologist, to £3,195/$6,495 for a unique 19 day archaeological adventure that follows in Alexander the Great's footsteps across Turkey. This tour is a remarkable opportunity to retrace his route from Troy to the Battle of Issus with Peter Sommer, who in 1994 walked 2,000 miles across Asia Minor retracing his march.
Sail in Luxurious Fashion
Turkey’s southwest coast offers the most spectacular cruising in the Mediterranean, full of craggy coves and sleepy fishing villages. Riddled with antiquities, it's remained largely undeveloped, still lapped by the clear waters on which the giants of ancient history sailed: Achilles, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony...
We have 13 scheduled trips for 2008:
One land-based archaeology tours:
In the footsteps of Alexander the Great
and 12 archaeological cruises:
Cruising the Carian Coast
Cruising the Ceramic Gulf
From Bodrum to Didyma
From Halicarnassus to Ephesus
Sailing the Lycian Shore
Walking and Sailing the Lycian Shore
Sailing the Lycian Shore - family trip.
The gulet
We cruise aboard the Almira, one of the best constructed and equipped yachts of its kind, 25m long, with eight en-suite cabins (max.16 people). Built of pine from the Taurus Mountains and mahogany, it follows a design developed for these waters in Byzantine times. The decks and saloon provide plenty of room for reading, lounging, and undisturbed relaxation. As we set sail on Homer's "wine dark sea", or set off to explore the stunning interior, we enter a forgotten land and discover a lost world of temples, tombs, and theatres.
